The term "pretirement" has been around since at least 2005 when J Peter Lindquist, author of the book "Solving the Retirement Puzzle" used the term to describe a new life stage that was emerging between "the rat race of a full career and the rocking chair of retirement." It has not histiorically been used to describe delayed entry into the job market, but rather personal reinvention and changing directions in one's mid-to-late career to focus more on finding fulfillment and purpose through the pursuit of personally menaingful work. Pretirement then, is a life stage characterized by personal re-invention and re-engagement in work that is personally meaningful and fulfilling.
