figurative note:Silver is a precious metal used in jewellery, coins, and cutlery. Its value is referred to in the expression born with a silver spoon in one's mouth which means coming from a wealthy family. However, when contrasted with gold, its worth is the lesser of the two, and a silver medal is given as second prize in a competition. Silver has also been opposed to the colour grey in various idioms. For example, the expression every cloud has a silver lining means that even dark situations can have comforting aspects. In addition, silver is now used instead of grey to refer to older people, e.g. silver surfer, to avoid the negative associations of grey. Silver also means articulate and persuasive in the expression silver-tongued.
