The strength and hardness of steel can be increased by cold working, but that will also make it less ductile.
The 300 series of stainless steels cannot be hardened by heat treatment but can be
hardened by cold working.
Cold working is a process in which metal is shaped at a fairly low temperature. This increases
the metal's yield strength but makes it less ductile.
