Word forms: (regular plural) drive shafts
( Automotive engineering : Vehicle components , Engine, transmission, and exhaust )
A drive shaft
is a shaft in a vehicle that transfers power from the gearbox
to the wheels.
The coupling of the drive shaft to the gearbox allows for the movement of the axles.
Power from the engine is delivered to the transmission, which in turn delivers power
to the drive shaft, which in turn transmits power to the drive wheels.
In a rear-wheel drive vehicle, the drive shaft turns very fast because it is positioned before the gear reduction of the differential.
