This design uses a packing on the tray to limit fluid oscillations and prevent dumping at low vapor velocities.
If the vapor velocity is too low, vapor does not flow through all the holes in the
tray, and liquid leaks through, which is known as dumping.
Dumping is a fault in distillation, caused by the low speed of a gas, which means that valve
trays do not operate very well.
