an embargo on trade with a country, esp one which prohibits receipt of exports from that country, with the intention of disrupting the country's economy
2. 
an embargo of all trade with a country or region, intended to damage or dislodge the government
▶ USAGE The term economic blockade, esp when referring to the US embargo against Cuba, is technically not correct.
