The gear ratio
is the ratio of the number of turns the output shaft
makes when the input
shaft turns once.
A gearset with a 1-inch drive gear and a 2-inch driven gear has a gear ratio of 2:1.
If the car is shifted into a higher gear, the gear ratio is reduced.
Through selection of the proper gear ratio, torque applied to the drive wheels can be multiplied.
