Word forms: (regular plural) parity bits
( Electrical engineering : Computing and control , Digital )
When parity is used with a serial port, an extra bit is sent with each data character,
arranged so that the number of 1 bits in each character, including the parity bit, is always odd or always even.
For the PC to receive the nine bits, it is necessary to treat the ninth bit as a parity bit.
In binary notation, a parity bit is an additional bit that is attached to each code group so that the total number
of 1s being transmitted is either odd or even.
