adverb [ADVERB after verb, be ADVERB]
Something that is moving up-river is moving towards the source of a river, from a point down the river. Something that is up-river is towards the source of a river.
⇒ Heavy goods could be brought up-river in barges.
⇒ He has a house down there but it's miles up river.
[+ of] ⇒ The vineyards of Anjou extend from west of Angers to up-river of Saumur.
[+ from] ⇒ ...La Reole, up-river from St-Macaire.
Up-river is also an adjective.
⇒ ...an upriver trip in Central Africa.
