English translation of Revolta da vacina
Revolta da vacina
feminine nounThis was a popular movement of opposition to the government which took place in Rio de Janeiro in 1904, following the passing of a law which made vaccination against smallpox compulsory. It was the culmination of general dissatisfaction with health reforms undertaken at that time by the scientist Osvaldo Cruz, and the relocation programme of the prefect Pereira Passos, as a result of which part of the population of Rio had been moved from the slums and shanty towns of the central region to suburbs much further out.
