The primary meaning of hand is the part of the body at the end of the arm. Other meanings of hand make reference to its shape, position, and function, especially its use in touching and moving objects in the physical world. The size of a hand is still used as a unit of measurement in horses. The appearance of a hand is reflected in a hand of bananas and pointing clock hands. The use of a hand for holding objects can be seen in a hand of cards and its ability to clap in the phrase give a (warm) hand to. Handwriting can be referred to simply as a hand, e.g. written in his own hand. Workers are referred to as hands, where the most pertinent part of their body represents the whole, likewise in the phrase all hands on deck. The multiple roles of a hand have led to transferred senses of: agency - have a hand in, assistance - lend/give a hand to, and control - in hand. Various gestures of giving are expressed by the phrasal verbs hand over, hand out, hand on, and hand in.
