The Tag der deutschen Einheit is the national holiday of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is celebrated on October 3rd, the day on which the two parts of Germany were re-unified in 1990. The tone of the day is political - serious speeches are made at official commemorative events - although people try to make it a day of rejoicing. The national holiday was formerly on June 17th, a day when the victims of the division of Germany were commemorated.
